Arts and Technology

The Art and Technology Department has started 2017 with the introduction of a wider range of elective classes to offer greater choice to students who wish to undertake creative subjects. Starting this year at Meadow Fair, drama classes are being offered to boys teaching them the fundamentals of acting and stagecraft as well as providing them with historical context. Year 9 and 10 students are offered two distinctly different art and design electives called Visual arts and Graphic design. The Visual arts elective inspires students through focussing on art movements such as cubism and impressionism, allowing students to explore these in depth through investigation and creative responses. Graphic design presents students with a design problem and requires them to use a design process to reach a suitable solution. This elective provides students with creative thinking, analytical and technical skills that they can potentially apply to career paths such as: architecture, engineering, advertising, industrial design, interior design and many more. Finally, the new elective of Photography and Digital Media is being offered for the first time this year, providing students with the opportunity to explore the world of photography and create a folio of their own photographic work.

In October, the Art and Technology Department is hosting the annual Sirius College Secondary Art Exhibition at Hume Global Learning Centre. This exhibition is a showcase of the very best work produced by students in the fields of: Art, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Photography, Multimedia, Programming, VCE computing, VCE Visual Communication Design, Textiles, Music and Drama. Last year’s exhibition was very successful, with a high parent turnout and great public exposure for the student’s artwork, we are hoping that this year’s exhibition will be even bigger. The Art and Technology Department is looking forward to seeing the results of all the hard work, talent, passion and enthusiasm that students bring to our great variety of subjects in 2017.

Year 7 (now 8s) LAKE TYERS Summer Camp 2016

On December 18, 2016 nine year 7 students hopped on to a bus with their camping bags, fishing gear and bright smiles ready to undertake a 5 day journey to East Gippsland and back. Chips, chocolate, biscuits and drinks were flying around the bus from hand to head all the way through the 5 hour trip to the beautiful water view town of Lake Tyers.

The camp was organized and run by the Pastoral Care department for the students who have shown excellence in their attendance, participation, behavior and punctuality in the afterschool programs in the entire year of 2016.

The camp was held in a summer holiday house next the beach of Lake Tyers (near Lakes Entrance) and the theme of the camp was summer and nature. The students enjoyed sightseeing, beach-fishing, beach soccer, book reading, values discussion, popcorn-movie sessions, fuzz ball, Wii, and other activities. The goal of the camp was to enhance the students’ social, physical, cultural, and religious, understanding, knowledge and skills while at the same time connecting and bonding them with nature.

Students were also required to undertake certain duties including bedroom leader, kitchen cleaner, vacuum person and others. Breakfast, lunch and dinner meals were provided, along with amazing movie sessions in the lounge room with popcorn, drinks, lollies and chips. Students received awards for various categories including quiz winner, punctuality, behavior and cleanest bedroom.

Overall it was an amazing experience that the students really enjoyed. However the students were upset to hear that one of their pastoral care teachers, Talip Sirin, will be moving on to VCE pastoral care for 2017. We wish him a successful year in VCE. Filling his shoes will be Velid Turkmen from the Languages department, we are sure he has some amazing program ideas for the students who are now in year 8.

In 2017 the year 8 students will be exposed to a few changes in the pastoral care programs including the addition of clubs, lunch discussions and the usual intercampus soccer tournaments, intercampus reading competitions, snow trips, picnics, movie sessions and other activities. We encourage all year 8 students in 2017 to participate in as many Pastoral care programs as possible.

Wishing all a wonderful and prosperous year.
